Tunisian knit stitch scrunchie Pattern

Today, I am making 10-year-old Liz proud by releasing this scrunchie pattern for FREE! At 10, I had just learned to crochet and thought that all crochet was just dishcloths and afghans. You also could not find me without a scrunchie on my head or wrist (but let's be honest, more often than not, I had one scrunchie holding up my ponytail and one on my wrist for looks).

Flash forward and I am now still loving crochet and obsessed with Tunisian crochet, making much more than just dishclothes! If you are here for the pattern, but are unfamiliar with Tunisian crochet, I suggest you hop on over to Toni from TLYarnCraft's YouTube page, because she has everything you need to know to get started. Another option would be to follow the pattern for the measurements and use a conventional crochet stitch instead of Tunisian Knit Stitch. While the texture will look different, you can still get the same shape and cuteness!

If you post a picture of your scrunchie on Instagram, be sure to use #tksScrunchie and tag @LittleOwlDesigns_ so I can re-post your amazing work!

Pattern Notes

Materials

Picture
  • 50 yds worsted weight yarn (4) - I used Bernat Baby Velvet
  • Size L 8.00mm Tunisian Crochet hook
  • Hair tie
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Threading needle

Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • st - stitch
  • TKS - Tunisian Knit Stitch
  • Ret - Return Pass
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet

Stitch notes

  • This pattern is made flat in a long rectangle. You'll connect the top and the bottom edges together by folding the piece over the hair tie and finishing with a row of single crochet around the edge. Then you'll seem the sides together to finish.
  • For the first row, pull your first loops up through the back bumps of the chains. I know it is a hassle, but it will be worth it when you are connecting the bottom and the top. It makes it more clear where you should put your hook on the bottom side. Trust me!
  • TKS -Tunisian Knit Stitch is made by inserting your hook in-between the vertical bars and pulling up a loop. As always, the last stitch is pulled up through the last two vertical bars on the side.
  • Return Pass will always start with a ch 1, then yarn over, pull through two loops until you get to the beginning of the row

The pattern

Ch 50 (or until about 16 inches in length)
Row 1: pull up loops through the back bumps of the chs, Ret
Row 2: TKS across, Ret
Repeat row 2 until your piece is 4 inches tall (mine was 15 rows total)
Sl st across to finish (don't cut yarn)

Construction

Picture
Take the hair tie and wrap it around the crocheted piece (see picture) so that the wrong side is facing out.
sc evenly across to connect the bottom and the top. Make sure you go through two loops on the bottom and two loops on the top.
Finish off the row and cut the yarn, leaving a tail for seeming
Use your favorite invisible seem method to sew the two ends together. I used the Mattress Stitch to seem mine.
